in. Not having the slightest idea how to spend your solitary existence on this planet can be worrying.
Extremely worrying. The trouble is, you have to make a decision.
At a young age the education system enforces us to slowly shut doors, then before we know it somehow specialise in a particular field, which ideally we will find a job in. This process neglects the one constant of life — change. The inabili t y to find out what you want to do with your life as the educational path progresses is entirely natural. The seemingly endless continuation of not knowing what it is exactly you want do with your life inevitably continues to be frustrating.
The fact is everyone was in the state of not knowing at some point. But it seems many people do find it. This is perhaps the most damaging, least worthwhile and irrationally stupid thing a person can say. You should never say this to someone in the expectation that this will help either party. Equally, people are more than willing to offer a range of advice on how to start. While all of these statements have elements of truth attached to them, they are generic. What if you work hard at entirely the wrong thing? What if what once inspired you and made you happy ceases to do so?
The result of these questions, which result in more questions? Complete and utter stress. Deciding what you want to do with your life starts every moment. It is constant.Carly Rae Jepsen - Happy Not Knowing [Audio]
And so much of it is so far out of your control, right from the start, that to feel guilty about your indecision is entirely unfair on yourself. In fact, the ability to not overly judge yourself is a skill, refined and never quite perfected with time. Stress can literally damage the body, and stress that is aimed in no particular direction can run in a seemingly unendurable cycle. Someday, and indeed every day, your life will be judged, but understand you never chose any of this in the first place.
Your choices are everything, but upon realising this it is utterly important to embrace the reality of decision-making — you cannot possibly take every factor into. This realisation will take a human being, most probably, into polarising directions. It may only increase the anxiety of any given decision. Or, it may be seen as a liberating epiphany, removing guilt and anxiety from our lives and instead finding the ability to live a far more fluid life.
There is a lot of things, an infinite. But understand you can continue to make your choices with the idea of the infinite engrained in them, because it never goes away. The greatest choices extend well beyond the lifetimes of those who made them. So, it is okay not to know what you want to do with your life.
Deciding to live on your own terms, following your own intuition and living as honestly as possible is the most important decision of all. Only you know the intimate details of your existence, but appreciate that everything behind you has worth.
The life you live will never be defined by any one thing unless you let it. If you continue to embrace the infinite possibilities of existence then you have at least decided something vital about what you want to do with your life. Get started.
